Tracy Partridge-Johnson, Founder of Self-Published Author, Interviews Beth Jones

TPJ: Hi Beth! Thank you for taking the time to share some of your indie author story with our readers. Let's start by talking about who you are and your background before publishing your books.

SECTION 1 — Author Information

TPJ: How would you describe yourself in a nutshell for readers who are just meeting you?

BJ: Writing stories of belonging, second chances, and the wild beauty of Wales. Tea, fairy lights, and a notebook never far from reach. 🍃

I write emotionally layered fiction that explores hidden histories, quiet resilience, and the strength of chosen family.

Based in North Wales, I craft novels from a small Victorian house with a Springer Spaniel pup and a Persian cat usually curled nearby. My stories often begin with a whisper — a feeling, a dream, a question — and grow into something that lingers long after the final page.

I never imagined I would write books that others would read, let alone love. I have no production team or marketing machine, I quietly release my stories and hope they find the people who need them most.

My first novel found unexpected readers across the world — including in Australia — a reminder that stories have a way of traveling farther than we ever plan.

When I'm not writing, I can often be found kayaking on Bala Lake, walking the forest paths near my home, or tending to my garden with a mug of tea in hand.

SECTION 2 — Books & Writing Background

TPJ: Before you became an author, what was life like for you? Any experiences that shaped your storytelling?

BJ: I became a nurse 15 years ago. I have always loved writing and reading books and would type out stories on my type writer as a child and was totally obsessed with the film Matilda. Books were my escape from childhood.

TPJ: What sparked the idea for your very first book?

BJ: My childhood traumas and how I overcame them and turned it into something positive.

TPJ: What genres feel like “home” for you—and why do they speak to you?

BJ: I write character driven fiction about farmhouses, found family and making your own home.

TPJ: How many books have you written so far? Which one holds a special place in your heart?

BJ: I've published nine books in total:

Still Water, Wild Heart

Barefoot Somewhere

Ash and Apple

Before the Apple Fell

Through the Hedge

The Winter He Found Her

The Winter She Found Them

The Lamp in the Window

TPJ: When you first started writing, what surprised you most about the publishing world?

BJ: I knew nothing about any of it. I tried getting a traditional publisher but found limited people wanting to take on new authors. Hybrid publishers wanted me to pay out a lot of money and then they wanted me to sign to say they had control of the story. The hardest part for me is the bedding down of chapters and page breaks.

SECTION 3 — Writing Process & Experience

TPJ: Are you more of a planner or a “write as it comes” kind of author?

BJ: I often write a chapter when I'm out somewhere and feel inspired. I write one chapter and then build my book around that at a later date.

TPJ: Do you have a favorite time of day to write—or any quirky rituals that help you get in the zone?

BJ: I often can’t sleep so will wake in the early hours of the morning and have to get up and write.

TPJ: What’s been your biggest challenge as a writer, and how did you push through it?

BJ: The fear of not being liked for my writing, not being good enough for readers.

TPJ: Why did you choose the self-publishing route? What does that freedom mean to you?

BJ: I wanted control over my own stories. I often fall head first into building my characters and I have a clear vision. It would be impossible to hand over a story knowing my vision could be changed.

SECTION 4 — Themes, Characters & Readers

TPJ: Who do you imagine reading your books? Who are you writing for?

BJ: Female readers 20-80. Those who enjoy the character becoming their own saviour/their own hero.

TPJ: What messages or themes do you hope readers take away from your stories?

BJ: Trauma survival, how to love someone with deep childhood wounds. I wanted to make it clear from how it feels to have trauma and how that is seen by the person who loves them.

TPJ: Do you have a character that feels especially close to your heart? Tell us why.

BJ: A lot of my female characters are different versions of myself. Who I would be if I was just myself...which I am learning to be. I also have written in close friends and family and their characters.

TPJ: Can you share a favorite scene or line from your work that still makes you smile?

BJ: Across the room, Evie stirred, smiling in her sleep. “Best Christmas ever,” she murmured. Mathew looked at Jess - the woman who’d walked into his life like a question and turned it into an answer - and thought, Aye. It really is.

SECTION 5 — Life Beyond Writing

TPJ: When you’re not writing, what brings you joy? Any hobbies or creative outlets?

BJ: I love cold water dipping, anything which brings my heart joy - helps me to heal that bit more. Writing books, going to church.

TPJ: Tell us about your family or pets—our readers love these personal touches!

BJ: I have a crazy Springer Spaniel called River. We love walking, cold water dipping and trying new foods! I have been with my husband since I was 16, and he has always believed in me. I have a Persian called Ben and a half Maine Coon called Elvis! I have the best son and daughter I could have ever asked for. I try my best to show them they are capable of anything!

TPJ: What’s one fun or surprising fact about you that readers might not expect?

BJ: I never thought anyone would read my books but they are currently starting to reach the US, Italy and Spain!

SECTION 6 — Looking Ahead

TPJ: What’s next for you? Any exciting projects or books on the horizon?

BJ: I am working on the third and final part of my series, The Winter She Found Herself.

TPJ: Where do you see your author journey five years from now?

BJ: I want my books on actual shelves not just on Amazon!

TPJ: Where’s the best place for readers to follow your work and join your community?

BJ: Facebook, TikTok or follow my author page on Amazon.
